Post-colonialism: final blog tasks

Summarise the three theorists we have looked at: Alvarado, Fanon and Said.

  • Alvarado:
Alvarado believed that there are four categories in terms of racial representations:

The Exotic
The Dangerous
The Pitied
The Humorous
  • Fannon:
Fanon- shows the impact of the race and what they were forced to commit to such as, infantilize, primitivize, decivilize and essentalize.

  • Said:
Said- shows the representations across all texts regarding the conflict between East and West and how they are represented in modern media (across all platforms).

Watch the opening of Yasmin (2004) again. Does it offer a positive or negative view of British Muslims? To what extent does it reinforce or challenge Edward Said's theory of Orientalism - that the west is superior to the exotic or uncivilised east?

In my opinion, I think that the opening of Yasmin offers both a positive and negative representation of British Muslims. To begin with it shows a positive representation of Muslims, by portraying the community as a one and united. This is shown where the young boy is singing his prayers and it is heard throughout the entire community.
Moreover, there is also a negative representation of Muslims, through the main protagonist, 'Yasmin', where she almost changes her identity to fit in with British society. Furthermore, another scene in which presents Muslims negatively is when there is graffiti on the shutter say 'Paki Go Home'. However, this can be argued that it also shows a negative representation of the White - British Yorkshire people.  This is shown in the scene in which she removes her headscarf and takes off her headscarf.
I think it does challenges 'Edward Said's theory of Orientalism, as the West is seen as uncivilised. This is demonstrated through the character who eats food out of the jar with his hands and almost scares off the children.

Choose THREE clips for EACH of the theorists and explain how you could apply that theory to the clip. Pick a selection of clips on YouTube from TV, film, music video or advertising and embed them in your blog before writing your analysis under each clip. Note: this means you need NINE clips in total on this blogpost.
